Insect Breeding & Test Organisms
Controlled breeding under defined conditions ensures reproducible test conditions and consistent test execution. Species, developmental stage and number of organisms are specifically tailored to the respective research question, product type and planned study design. On this basis, test programs can be planned in a structured manner and implemented in a methodologically sound way.
Categorization
by damage pattern
BioGenius classifies insects and other arthropods into four defined categories – differentiated by the type and extent of damage caused. This systematic classification forms the basis for the targeted selection of suitable test organisms in the respective application context.
The species maintained in the BioGenius insect breeding facility are specifically aligned with these categories, as they are predominantly named as preferred target or test organisms in relevant guidelines and guidance documents, or are explicitly required.

Overview / Insects &
Arthropods for testing purposes
BioGenius operates an in-house insect and arthropod breeding facility for the continuous provision of defined test organisms. In addition, further species can be sourced on a project basis via qualified network partners.
Selection, availability and specification of the organisms are specifically aligned with the respective research question, product profile and study design. This ensures that the required species spectrum can be provided flexibly and as needed.

Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers about breeding and providing test organisms for testing purposes. If you have specific questions, you can submit a project inquiry at any time.
Is the species selection limited to the species listed?
No. In principle, any species can be requested initially, and BioGenius will check whether it is available within the network.
Why are these specific species bred?
The species maintained in the BioGenius insect breeding facility are specifically aligned with the four typical categories (hygiene and public health pests, material pests, stored-product pests & nuisance pests). In addition, these species are predominantly cited as preferred target or test organisms in relevant guidelines and guidance documents (BPR, WHO, EPA, etc.) or are explicitly required.
Would you like to register a product as CIK or FIK and require efficacy data?
To register biocidal products with a general claim “CIK” or “FIK”, efficacy data against defined target species are required. The selection of test organisms is based on the relevant guidelines and the intended area of application of the product.
In the Crawling Insect Killer (CIK) area, crawling hygiene and stored-product pests are typically tested, for example:
- Cockroaches (e.g. Blattella germanica, Blatta orientalis/Periplaneta americana)
- Ants (e.g. Lasius niger)
In the Flying Insect Killer (FIK) area, flying target organisms are the focus, in particular:
- Houseflies (Musca domestica)
- Mosquitoes (e.g. Aedes spp., Culex spp.)
- Wasps (e.g. Vespula vulgarins, Vespula germanica)
The species listed are available in our in-house insect breeding facility and correspond to the target organisms that are preferentially cited or required in guidelines. This enables efficacy tests to be carried out reproducibly, promptly and in line with regulatory requirements.
We will be pleased to coordinate the selection of test species with you on a project basis, taking into account the product formulation, mode of action and target market.
Does BioGenius breed insects only for internal product testing?
No. Upon request, BioGenius also breeds for other purposes (e.g. the manufacture of medicines, etc.) and in some cases on a larger scale.
